MontCo’s first Tai Chi court opens Saturday

Area residents who practice Tai Chi can now practice the martial arts technique at Rockville’s new Tai Chi court in Cabin John Regional Park, the first court of its kind in Montgomery County and one of very few in the country.

The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission and the Wu Wei Tai Chi Club are hosting the court’s grand opening on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will feature remarks by Planning Board Chairman Francoise Carrier, state Del. Kathleen Dumais, state Del. Brian Feldman and County Councilwoman Nancy Floreen, D-at large, as well as martial arts demonstrations and a pot luck lunch.

The new court consists of a flagstone circle, 48 feet in diameter, that incorporates a Yin/Yang symbol. It was funded through a combination of Montgomery Parks allocation, state bonds and private grants.

The park addition was built to memorialize David Chen, who practiced Tai Chi in the park for 12 years.
